Celldömölk

Celldömölk - the capital of the VulkánSág area

Thanks to its situation, natural treasures and ecclesiastic relics it is the touristic juncture of the region.
The small town has a history overarching 750 years, being born by the merging of five neighbouring villages.

Pórdömölk, a contemporary abbey seat was first mentioned in a document in 1252. Although its monastery perished with time, the remnants of the Romanesque church are still visible. The cult of Mary was revived by the abbey Odó Koptik after the Turkish times. He had a copy done of the statue of Máriacell, which he placed in the small chapel near the ruined abbey. A new Virgin Mary Church was built between the years 1746-48, with the financial help of the donations offered due to the repeatedly happening miracles.

The fourteen altars,
the pulpit, baptismal font, the numerous crucifixes and silver candle-holders make a huge impression on visitors. The repository of the church welcomes visitors with a permanent exhibition, introducing the shrine’s treasures dating back hundreds of years. Next to it we can find the building of the Benedictine abbey with the statue of Virgin Mary on its facade. In the nearby square a Holy Trinity Statue is erected, with the figures of Saint Stephen, Saint Paul the hermit, Saint John of Nepomuk, Saint Florian on its pedestal.

The Calvary can be found behind the church. Its finishing in 1755 completed the stations of the pilgrimage. By the beginning of the 19th century the settlement became the centre of Kemenesalja region being a railway junction, the memory of which is commemorated by an engine museum at the site of the railway station. During the last few years, the town has undergone a dynamic development.

The old buildings were renovated, the main square as well as the square in front of the community centre acquired a new look. Besides the fountain we can also find the statue of the founder abbey, Odó Koptik in the newly finished Baroque square. The recently finished Volcano Thermal-and Experience Bath, the museum of Sághegy was renovated and extended with a playground, the Ság Volcano Pathway was completed as well as the Kemenes Volcano Park Visitor Centre at the feet of the mountain.
